Successful Projects

Landfill construction under strict regulations.

In heavy-duty landfill construction, Sanders Tiefbau GmbH & Co. KG relies on machines from Boppard. This includes their landfill expansion in Brüggen in the Lower Rhine region. In midsummer 2026, no fewer than three fifth-generation single drum rollers are already in operation. Compaction on the landfill slopes, with gradients of up to 44%, presents no challenge. This is where BOMAG machines really come into their own, with outstanding gradeability and sufficient traction and power whatever the application.

Landfills are highly complex engineering structures. Strict regulations apply to their construction and operation. Waste management and emissions control laws and regulations protecting people and the environment must be strictly complied with. Sanders Tiefbau has been a full-service provider in this field for decades.

Landfill liners fall into three categories: base, intermediate and surface liners. Sanders Tiefbau has been commissioned to carry out various sealing works at the construction site in Brüggen.

Landfill sites are constructed in accordance with the multi-barrier principle. From a structural engineering perspective, this approach incorporates, among other things, a geotechnical barrier, a layer of mineral clay and a plastic sealing membrane. A protective fleece and a layer of drainage material are installed on top of the sealing membrane to ensure that the resulting seepage water is properly drained from the landfill body and disposed of.

Increasing capacity.

The Brüggen II landfill site is close to the Dutch border and operated by Entsorgungsgesellschaft Niederrhein (EGN). Waste up to and including landfill class DK II is accepted here.

In summer 2026, Sanders Tiefbau GmbH & Co KG was commissioned to construct an additional section. The new landfill section covers 40,000 m². By the time the project is completed, over 100,000 cubic metres of clay, sand, spoil and gravel will have been moved.

On some days, up to 15 machines are working simultaneously on the site—excavators, bulldozers, tractors, wheel loaders and lorries fitted with countless attachments. Sanders Tiefbau GmbH & Co KG also has three heavy BOMAG single drum rollers in operation: two BW 219 PDH-5 machines and a BW 213 DH-5.

Single drum rollers for landfill construction.

Landfill work has been one of the company’s core businesses since its foundation. Sanders Tiefbau GmbH & Co KG has decades of experience in this field. The range of services extends from excavating pits and preparing the base to sealing the landfill site with mineral sealing materials such as loam and clay, or impermeable geosynthetics. If required, it can also handle waste placement using specially equipped machinery.

Foreman Karsten Mohren coordinates operations at the landfill site in Brüggen II. Clay is used as a sealing material. The clay is first worked using a tractor-towed stabilizer, then loaded by an excavator, transported to the construction site by dumper trucks and tipped out at the foot of the embankment. The layer is installed up the slope with centimetre precision using a crawler dozer.

Next, it’s the turn of the heavyweight single drum rollers: two BOMAG BW 219 machines with padfoot drum (PDH) make several passes to create an interlocking pattern. An independent external supervisor monitors the entire construction process to verify that work is carried out correctly, documenting this with a wide range of samples—including checks on the compaction values of the clay. Another crawler dozer then levels the layer again. The BOMAG BW 213 single drum roller with smooth drum (DH) then carries out the final compaction and prepares the surface for laying the plastic sealing membrane. Several layers, each 25 cm thick, are installed here. The water content of the clay is also checked several times a day per layer; a reading of 23 to 27% is required to achieve a Proctor density of at least 95%.

The required compaction values are easily achieved with the 20-ton BOMAG BW 219 PDH-5 single drum rollers. These BOMAG single drum rollers are particularly well suited to working on highly cohesive soils with a high water content. The padfoot drum increases the surface area, which helps the substrate to dry evenly. The result: fewer cracks.

The material must not be allowed to dry out or it will crack. Furthermore, insufficient compaction can lead to delayed settlement and settlement caused by void collapse. This could also damage the sealing layers. Karsten Mohren, foreman at Sanders Tiefbau GmbH & Co KG

Foreman Karsten Mohren explains that an even heavier model, which might look more powerful on paper, would almost be too large for this application. In his view, the BOMAG BW 219 PDH-5 single drum roller is the perfect all-rounder. ‘The machines can be used anywhere: they handle gradients with ease, perform equally well on the next section, where the ground is level again.’

BOMAG H-series single drum rollers are characterised by a high-torque drive. Gradients of up to 60% (at the Brüggen landfill site, the maximum is 44%) are no obstacle for these earthwork rollers thanks to their dual pump system. The machines are ideally equipped for landfill and embankment construction and for working on slopes, where they offer excellent stability. Engine power is converted into traction as effectively as possible.

The BOMAG single drum rollers offer excellent gradeability. What’s more, our roller operators praise the machine’s simple operating concept, its reliability and its ideal weight distribution. Karsten Mohren, foreman at Sanders Tiefbau GmbH & Co KG

The single drum roller operators are also full of praise. They say they never get the feeling the machine might tip over. ‘The weight distribution seems to be just right.’

The simple operating concept has also won over the Sanders Tiefbau GmbH & Co KG team: ‘Each switch has a clearly defined function, the steering is precise and, of course, there’s the hallmark BOMAG quality: the single drum rollers are quite simply reliable.’

Another advantage of BOMAG single drum rollers: thanks to ECOMODE, the BW 213 DH-5 and two BW 219 PDH-5 machines always work and compact in the optimum engine speed range, saving fuel and reducing machine wear. ECOMODE reduces exhaust emissions and lowers noise levels on the construction site.

ECOMODE makes a real difference, particularly when the single drum roller moves from flat ground onto a slope—in other words, when it suddenly starts climbing a steep gradient. Even when reversing down the slope, the engine runs only at the speed actually needed. David Blum, BOMAG Product Manager

At constant utilisation, calculations show the Brüggen II landfill site has capacity for almost two decades. As part of proper land reclamation, vast quantities of earth have to be moved again and again.
