The conversion of former military sites is both an opportunity and a challenge for local authorities. With the redevelopment of the Ledward Barracks, Schweinfurt in Lower Franconia is setting an example and attracting national and international attention with its large-scale urban development project.
"I don’t know of any other paver that is so perfectly adapted to the requirements of footpath construction. The clearance width and operator’s overview of the machine show the designers’ passion for the best solution. Just look at the height-adjustable driver’s platform or the curve assistant with automatic radius control – these are functions that we in asphalt paving have long wished for in the compact class as well."
Carusallee, the new green axis, is essential for the structure of the emerging quarter. The new quarter will provide a lasting impetus for all neighbouring areas. Asphalt connects people and provides structures for urban living spaces. This is particularly true for such ambitious urban development projects as this one. A total of approx. 11,500 square metres of high-quality asphalt surfaces had to be created for the Carusallee and the outdoor area for the State Garden Show. This is best left to a company from the region that specialises in asphalt paving and has a flexible machine fleet with state-of-the-art roller technology.
The Schaupp Asphalt-Bau GmbH & Co. KG company from Hammelburg in Lower Franconia knows what counts when it comes to asphalt paving, and deployed BOMAG’s new BF 200 C-2 compact paver (built in 2020) for the first time on this job. Whether for a small courtyard or a main thoroughfare, the specialisation in rolled asphalt paving on roads, squares and paths makes the medium-sized company with 14 employees a sought after partner, e.g. for road construction and civil engineering companies without their own asphalt fleet.
The BF 200 has a variable working width of 1.1 m to 3.4 m with a paving thickness of up to 20 cm, and is therefore particularly suitable for confined site conditions. The paving width can be extended incrementally to a width of 3.40 metres; short setup times due to BOMAG’s proven Quick Coupling System, and rapid heat-up times thanks to the effective BOMAG Magmalife screed heating system. With innovative technologies that were previously only available on large pavers, asphalt paving in the footpath sector is also experiencing a boost in quality and innovation.
The asphalt base course of the approximately 11,500 square metres of asphalt surface was implemented with AC 32 TS asphalt base layer mix and a paving thickness of 10 or 14 cm. AC 32 TS asphalt concrete with a paving thickness of 3.5 cm was used for the asphalt surface.
“The men are delighted with their new ‘toy’. Not only is it the most compact asphalt paver with a minimum paving width of 110 centimetres, but it stands out above all for its outstanding ease of operation, which our machine drivers confirm.”
The BF 200’s new and unique 2-platform concept has also proven itself many times over on the Carusallee job site. This allows the operator to choose between two platforms of different heights. The higher platform provides an excellent all-round view. On the lower platform, the operator can comfortably stand upright. Furthermore, the operator has a complete overview on both sides, thanks to the redundant control lever on the left and right. This means the BF 200 can be controlled just as ergonomically and accurately on the left as on the right, depending on which side of the paver the asphalt joints have to be monitored. Peter Abelshauser says: “Demonstrating your skills for the State Garden Show is, of course, also a matter of prestige. It's even more fun with such a manoeuvrable asphalt paver because it promotes teamwork perfectly, thanks to its well-thought-out design and highly intuitive operating concepts.”
