Successful Projects

Nine nights of precision work.

Such a scene is truly rare: 40 BOMAG heavy tandem rollers operating simultaneously—right in the heart of Beijing, a metropolis of 22 million people.

In summer 2025, a comprehensive renovation project was scheduled for the central section of Chang’an Street—a road that embodies both the historical significance of China’s capital and its modern vibrancy.
Central and unmistakable in these construction works: heavy articulated BOMAG tandem rollers of the BW 203 AD-4 series. With their reliability and performance, 40 units of this flagship model from BOMAG’s Changzhou plant ensured smooth project execution and compliance with stringent quality standards.

A construction site of superlatives.

Originally widened to ten lanes in 2009 and closed to heavy traffic, Chang’an Street runs directly past Tian’anmen Square and key government buildings, including the Great Hall of the People and the National Museum of China. On both sides of the roadway, covering a total area of 330,000 square metres—equivalent to around 46 football fields—stone mastic asphalt had to be laid and compacted to the highest standard. The comprehensive road renewal between the Fuxingmen and Jianguomen intersections was carried out by Beijing Zhuochi Municipal Engineering Co., Ltd. in cooperation with Beijing Xinyi Machinery Rental Co.

Due to the special significance of Chang’an Street, construction work could only be carried out at night. The 6.77 km-long site was divided into 38 sections. From July 29 to August 7, 2025, work was performed night after night in up to eight sections simultaneously. In addition to machines from the BW 203 AD-4 series, BOMAG tandem rollers from the BW 90 SL-5 and BW 120 AD-5 series were deployed, as these lighter models are ideally suited to finishing work and precise compaction along kerbs and traffic islands.

The most compact machine in its class.

The BOMAG BW 203 AD-4 is designed to meet the demanding requirements of durable asphalt road construction. It delivers outstanding compaction results across a wide range of applications, thanks to large and small amplitudes and individually switchable drums. Even compacting stone mastic asphalt presents no challenge for the BW 203 AD-4—owing to its 0.69 mm amplitude.

In the 13-ton weight class, the BW 203 AD-4 is significantly shorter than comparable machines, with an overall length of just 4,610 mm (as of December 2025). This articulated tandem roller is exceptionally easy and precise to manoeuvre and, with its compact dimensions, can be transported quickly from one job site to another. Relocation is fast and straightforward: tie-down points and the articulation lock are readily accessible. Despite its space-saving design, the BW 203 AD-4 features a generously sized 1,000-litre water tank—a decisive advantage on large-scale projects such as this one in the heart of Beijing, where frequent refilling would otherwise be necessary. The spray system is equipped with two redundant water pumps to keep the drums reliably wet. Water output can be adjusted to meet project-specific quirements.

Operator-focused cab design.

On the BW 203 AD-4, the seat unit including the control levers can be shifted laterally across the entire cab width and rotated by 45° in both directions. This ensures the operator always has an optimal working position and excellent all-round visibility. Operation is safe and intuitive. The combination of sliding seat and folding window provides a clear view of the drum edge.

Large cab windows also give the operator a clear view of the drum spray system. Precise work along obstacles is easy, as no components protrude beyond the sides of the BW 203 AD-4. All controls are clearly labelled, and switch positions are always unambiguous. Displays use clear symbols to indicate machine status, allowing even new operators to feel confident on the BW 203 AD-4 within a very short time.

Vibrations are minimised through effective damping—an important factor during long night shifts in humid summer conditions. This supports sustained concentration and reduces operator fatigue. For maximum comfort, an optional air-conditioning system is available.

A roller for every situation.

The engineers behind the Changzhou-built machines always adopt a practical, application focused approach: like the BW 120 AD-5 and BW 90 SL-5, the BW 203 AD-4 follows BOMAG’s EasyService concept and is designed without grease nipples. BOMAG’s articulated tandem rollers use special hermetically sealed bearings and high-quality lubricants, ensuring reliable lubrication and a clean machine at all times. EasyService also means that all maintenance points are easily accessible from ground level, allowing fluids to be changed quickly and safely. High-quality components ensure a long machine life. The drum in particular reflects BOMAG’s globally recognised quality standards: its shell is exceptionally thick. On the BW 203 AD-4, it measures an impressive 27 mm.

Reliability, user-friendliness, cost-efficiency and sufficient power for any job site—the BOMAG machines deployed on Chang’an Street in summer 2025 combine these key strengths impressively. With machines from the Changzhou plant, projects with ambitious schedules and demanding quality requirements can be executed safely and efficiently. Beijing Zhuochi Municipal Engineering Co., Ltd. and Beijing Xinyi Machinery Rental Co. rely on this expertise—even for projects of this scale and significance.
