Trial study: Light tandem roller from BOMAG with electric or gas engine

Boppard, 9 April 2019. Alternative drives are also in demand for construction machinery. At bauma 2019, BOMAG will therefore be presenting tried and tested machines with alternative drive concepts for the future. A particular highlight is the lightweight BW 120 tandem roller as a concept design with two new drive versions: with an electro-hydraulic drive and batteries, or an environmentally-friendly gas engine. The available alternative drive technologies are efficient, economical and remarkably quiet! bauma visitors will be able to see for themselves at the BOMAG stand. An electric BW 120 will be demonstrated live on the open-air exhibition ground (FS 1009 and FS 1109/1).

There are good reasons for the increasing use of alternative drive technology: Lower fuel consumption and emissions and the quiet operation speak for themselves. BOMAG is interested in discussing the pros and cons of new drive concepts and possible application scenarios with customers and interested parties at bauma, which is why they will be presenting two innovative drive solutions as prototypes for the lightweight BW 120 tandem roller for the first time. The electro-hydraulic drive with two powerful electric motors in the tandem roller impresses with its dynamically responsive top performance and minimum noise emissions. The future-proof version with an environmentally friendly gas engine boasts excellent energy efficiency and significantly reduced emissions, making the machine ideally equipped for current and future limit values in regulated markets. The electric tandem roller is powered by a high-performance battery pack; the gas version by a commercially available propellant gas cylinder, which, after a short briefing by staff, can be replaced easily and safely in 5-10 minutes. For ordinary applications, one LPG gas tank bottle is sufficient for approximately five operating hours. It is located where the diesel tank is usually sited.

Optimal compaction in noise-sensitive areas

The tandem roller is suitable for small and medium soil and asphalt compaction work, for example, pavements, bicycle paths, and parking spaces. Due to its extremely low noise emissions, the electric tandem roller is the perfect choice for jobs in noise-sensitive areas such as hospitals or schools as well as on night construction sites in urban areas. Thanks to the low emissions of the gas drive and the emission-free electric drive, it is possible to work in enclosed spaces such as car parks or halls. All in all, the alternative drive technologies ensure that operators, site personnel, residents and the environment will be subject to less pollution in future. Due to the significantly lower maintenance costs compared to conventional machines with petrol engines or diesel drives with soot particle filters (DPF), service costs are also considerably reduced.

Wide variety: other alternatives in BOMAG’s portfolio

In addition to the lightweight BW 120 tandem roller presented as concept designs with electric or gas drive, BOMAG will also be showing future-proof solutions with conventional drive technologies in Munich. The BW 138 with diesel engine and equipped with soot particulate filter now fulfils the EU emissions standard V. Another interesting option is downsizing with machines such as the BW 100 with an output of 18.5 kW. Another option to be presented by BOMAG is the BW 900-50 tandem roller with petrol engine and an output of 14.9 kW; this is a drive solution that BOMAG has successfully offered on the North American market for many years. BOMAG is committed to ensuring that its future drive solutions are perfectly tailored to customer requirements for efficient and economical compaction, and that construction machinery is well equipped to meet growing environmental and occupational safety standards in the long term. The company is therefore looking forward to discussing the practical benefits and opportunities presented by conventional and new technologies for the future with users at bauma.
