New single drum roller launch
The BOMAG Innovation Days 2015 event

01/10/2015: BOMAG invited customers worldwide to its headquarters in Boppard on the Rhine for the Innovation Days event, which ran from 14 to 19 September 2015. Visitors from Europe, Asia, America and Africa watched the range of BOMAG earthwork and road construction machines in action on different applications. The focus of the presentation was launch of the latest generation of single drum rollers weighing 11 to 26 tonnes, which were being demonstrated to an international audience for the first time at this event.

This year’s programme for the BOMAG Innovation Days was exceptional: over a period of six days, the company offered customers and guests presentations, workshops, live machine demonstrations and an exclusive look at what goes on behind the scenes in production. “We are delighted that we have had the opportunity of getting so many visitors genuinely interested in our programme again this year – and not just in the event as a whole, but obviously in specific model types”, said Jörg Unger, President of the BOMAG Group.

Workshops on all aspects of site operation
The two-day series of events combined machine demonstrations with factory tours and workshops: for example, Dieter Straußberger (Dipl.-Ing.), Head of Highway and Transportation Engineering for TÜV Rheinland LGA Bautechnik GmbH, gave a practical presentation on “Soil compaction: the basis of every structure”. Professor Dr.-Ing. Alfred Ulrich, Head of the Cologne laboratory for construction machinery at the Technical University of Cologne (TH Köln), also presented solutions and techniques on the topic of “reliable automated road construction” in a small discussion group.

Machine demonstration live and in colour
The machine demonstrations which took place on the BOMAG proving grounds, directly opposite the main factory, included typical areas of site application. Machines from all product segments were involved. The milling machines opened with an impressive performance: The heavy-duty BM 2000/75 cold planer milled up to 35 cm of asphalt, which was then relaid by a BOMAG paver, before being compacted with tandem and pneumatic tyred rollers. For customers primarily using light equipment in their businesses, there was a multitude of interesting innovations including petrol or gas driven tampers, multi-purpose compactors and vibratory plates. The spectators were also highly impressed by the rock crushing demo by the single drum rollers using special rock-crushing drums. However, the main focus was clearly on the new generation of single drum rollers in the weight category of 11 to 26 tonnes. These single drum rollers, one of the main product segments for BOMAG , are now available in the 12 tonne category. The gradeability of the machines was also demonstrated live and, due to the wet weather, in the toughest site conditions. At the end of the machine demonstration, motocross riders provided an adrenaline kick, jumping over built up obstacles in pairs. Beforehand, a high speed soil compactor had demonstrated its huge power by turning a car into a compact pile of metal. After the presentations, visitors took the opportunity to examine the new machines in detail and drive them themselves.

“We’re really happy that this year’s event was another success and one we were able to experience with our customers. The general atmosphere was one of continual excitement , despite some bad weather. We showed our machines in the way they’re used in practice and are already looking forward to our next Innovation Days in two years time”, concluded Jonathan Stringham, Head of Marketing at BOMAG.
Despite the weather, customers were drawn to Boppard from all over the world to attend this year’s Innovation Days at BOMAG.
