Bundespräsident Gauck checks out BOMAG single drum rollers

For the first time since entering office as Bundespräsident, Joachim Gauck was a guest for the day in Rhineland-Palatinate. On Wednesday 22 August 2012 the head of state travelled from the Palatinate via Rhine-Hesse into the Rhine valley accompanied by the Ministerpräsident Kurt Beck. The itinerary included a tour of BOMAG in Boppard. BOMAG is the global market leader in compaction technology, employing 1400 people at its Boppard site and 2200 worldwide.

Accompanied by their partners, Bundespräsident Joachim Gauck and Ministerpräsident Kurt Beck were received at BOMAG's heavy equipment centre late on Wednesday afternoon. Jörg Unger, President of BOMAG, gave the Bundespräsident a warm welcome: "All of us at BOMAG, the Management and staff, are very pleased that you are here and feel honoured by your visit. Seeing BOMAG equipment on the road always feels extra special to us. We hope that you will also feel the same after your visit here and will be happily reminded of us when you see "a BOMAG" on your travels.

Bundespräsident Gauck thanked everyone for their warm welcome and emphasised the importance of medium-sized businesses for Germany. It is precisely companies like BOMAG that contribute towards Germany's export success and its continuing existence. "I'm therefore particularly pleased that your company is geared towards both the national and international markets," said Gauck.

Joachim Gauck greeted the staff on late shift during his tour along the assembly line for single drum rollers, where he learned about the individual production stages. He was particularly enthusiastic about the machine technology and praised the fact that German engines were being fitted. A special highlight of the tour was the "machine marriage" where the premounted rear and front frames of a single drum roller were connected to each other. The Bundespräsident himself carried out the final torque check on the articulated joint of a single drum roller amidst applause from the guests and staff present. Later, Bundespräsident Gauck talked to the product management, the Works Committee, and company trainees about their work at BOMAG.

After the official farewell from Management the Bundespräsident took his leave, shaking hands with trainees and employees.
