BOMAG’s autonomous tandem roller wins iF DESIGN AWARD 2020

Boppard, 6 March 2020. This year's iF DESIGN AWARD goes to BOMAG, making the company one of the winners of this world-renowned design prize. BOMAG’s fully autonomous tandem roller ROBOMAG, which was developed as a technology study, received the award in the category “Professional Concept”. The iF DESIGN AWARD is a prestigious prize issued once a year by iF International Forum Design GmbH in Hanover, one of the oldest independent design institutions in the world.

ROBOMAG draws on the know-how gained by BOMAG in cooperation with the Technical University of Kaiserslautern when converting road rollers to fully autonomous systems. The project employs technologies such as GPS, Lidar and state-of-the-art position sensors. With ROBOMAG, BOMAG is making its vision of fully autonomous construction machinery a reality. The automated tandem roller won over the 78-strong, independent, international jury of experts as an overall concept: The fully autonomous ROBOMAG tandem roller can be used completely independently in a defined work area. The system obtains information on position, situation and movement using a combination of different technologies for spatial orientation,  environmental perception and environmental safety. A comprehensive safety concept with sensory environment recognition is used to prevent collisions.

ROBOMAG is a pure technology study and serves BOMAG as a vision for the near future. Competition was fierce at this year’s iF DESIGN AWARD: The jury had to choose between 7,298 submissions from 56 countries.
