Winners of the competition for the FAYAT BOMAG Academy announced

In collaboration with the Chamber of Architects of Rhineland-Palatinate, Boppard construction equipment company BOMAG invited tenders for an architectural competition in July 2011 to design the FAYAT BOMAG Academy customer and training centre. The panel met on 29 November 2011. The winner of the first prize are the renowned architects GRAFT Gesellschaft von Architekten mbH from Berlin.

A total of 14 designs and models were assessed and the judges were impressed by the quality of all the plans, especially in view of the difficult requirements for the competition.
The multi-functional building which will be built on difficult terrain, includes:

  • Training rooms and offices for Sales and Service
  • Outdoor demonstration grounds for the full product range
  • Visitors' auditorium and cafeteria
  • Outdoor areas for ocassional large-scale events
  • "Transparent workshop"
  • Additional office areas for staff
  • Canteen/restaurant
  • Staff and visitor car parks, incl. bus/coach parking spaces
  • Open air exhibition areas, incl. gardens and landscaped areas

The entire complex is to be divided into several modules that can be built chronologically and extended to match the future requirements of the company. Not an easy task - which is why the company, in collaboration with the Chamber of Architects of Rhineland-Palatinate and a support competition office, planwerk -590 from Koblenz, decided to develop a competition process tailored to industrial enterprises for optimum construction planning with less bureaucratic effort. BOMAG is delighted with the outcome: "Cooperation with the Chamber of Architects went smoothly. Preparation for this kind of competition may seem to involve a lot of time and effort at first, but in fact if we had commissioned only one or two architects, we would have had to determine all preliminary considerations, the floor space plan, logistic details and a whole lot more. And what's more all of that without a neutral party to assist us, like Prof. Guido Jax from planwerk -590," says Ralf Junker, Head of Production at BOMAG. "We became even more aware of crucial aspects for planning and final implementation actually during the processing of applications, and at the conference with the architects and panel meetings."
The result of the competition is very interesting and was on public display at the Town Hall in Boppard between 13 and 18 of December 2011. The winner of the first prize is GRAFT based in Berlin. The runner-up is the Austrian office of HOT Architektur from Berlin; the third prize went to the Berlin office, J. Mayer H., and the fourth place once again to an Austrian office, Marte.Marte Architekten ZT from Weiler. Prizes also went to AV1 Architekten, Kaiserslautern and Nieto Sobejano, Architects with offices in Berlin and Madrid.
